From an environmentally sustainable perspective, wood packaging has many positive attributes for the reason that wood is a renewable resource. Especially compared to plastics. Use of wood sourced from sustainably harvested forests helps reduce the carbon footprint because it has a negative carbon footprint. Negative carbon footprint is a term that refers to the process which allows carbon to be stored in the wood.

A comparative research has been done by a Dutch research company with regard to the impact to the environment between a wooden pallet and a plastic pallet. It appears that a wooden pallet has up to 25% less impact than a plastic pallet. The factsheet is currently being revised. Once completed the revised version can be downloaded here.
